"Discover the natural wonders and spectacular vistas of one of the most remote and ancient landscapes left in the world today. Be overwhelmed by the breathtaking contrasts of rich, red cliffs plunging into the azure ocean. Come face to face with the salt water crocodile, once almost hunted to extinction but now a true icon of the region. Participate in conservation activities designed to educate and assist with the management of the region's wilderness values. You will be swept away by the romance and grandeur of sailing a traditionally rigged tall ship to locations that are so off the beaten track, they are inaccessible by road".
* Please note: The Darwin-Broome itinerary the reverse of the below.
Day 1
Join your fellow travellers aboard the Leeuwin II in beautiful Broome. Often called ‘The Gateway to the Kimberley', Broome is home to the world's finest pearls, historic Chinatown, and the iconic 22km stretch of pristine white sand that is Cable Beach.
Days 2 - 4
Set sail for the Lacapedes, a group of small islands off the west coast of the Dampier Peninsula, where turtle and seabird rookeries dominate the landscape.
Go ashore with a local indigenous guide, either at stunning Cape Leveque or Sunday Island, and learn of the indigenous cultural history of the Kimberley's Bardi people.
In transit to Raft Point and Montgomery Reef, take the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Crocodile Creek and enjoy an invigorating fresh water swim.
Days 5 - 7
Hike to Raft Point Cave and soak up the incredible atmosphere of this stunning location. Relax and enjoy the awe-inspiring amphitheatre of timeless indigenous artwork.
Your arrival at Montgomery Reef will be timed to meet the dropping tide. You will literally walk amongst it all and witness first hand the daily life of a coral reef community.
Sail further north to Bigge Island, stopping en route at historic Careening Bay. Here, you will learn of the amazing voyages of Philip Parker King, and visit the famous Boab tree carved by the crew of the HMS Mermaid to commemorate her ‘careening' for repairs in 1820.
Bigge Island, the largest island in the Kimberley, is where you will experience the powerful artwork of the Wandjini and Kaiara Spirits with their huge, haloed heads, believed by the Wunambal people to control the weather.
Days 8 - 10
Continue to weave your way north through islands and patch reefs to Koolama Bay, where you will take a ride in the ship's dories up the King George River to the spectacular King George Falls, the highest single drop falls in the Kimberley. No visit to the region is complete without a hike to the top and a refreshing swim in the freshwater pools there.
Day 11
Enjoy the exhilaration of sailing for Darwin by day and by night across Napoleon Bonaparte Gulf. There will be plenty of time to relax and reflect on your life-changing adventure, having followed in the footsteps of the early explorers through one of the last true wilderness locations on the planet.
Day 12
Arrive in the modern, multicultural city of Darwin and bid farewell to your new-found friends. The sense of having shared with them the feeling of being lost in another time of adventure and exploration will stay with you long after you say goodbye.
