melissa and charity visit faraway bay, june 2007

our stay:

3 days / 2 nights. We joined a chartered light aircraft from Kununurra and flew over the King George Falls before landing at Faraway Bay's remote airstrip (just over an hour later). We were met at the airstrip by a special 'open air' jeep (the whole roof had been cut off) and transferred to the Bush Camp at Faraway Bay.

cabin: ensuited cabin

We stayed in one of the 6 ensuited cabins (there are 2 other cabins - without ensuite) with twin beds (other cabins feature King beds); an outdoor shower' and basic amenities including 240V overhead fans and lights. Each cabin boasts spectacular views over the bay and sea breezes flow freely through the gauzed windows.

top 3 sights / activities:

1)  Afternoon tour to 'The Lost World' - ancient Bradshaw rock art, talked about in Ian Wilson's book 'The Lost World of the Kimberley'. It's fascinating to know that this rock art predates any other in the world (even Egyptian!)

2) The experience of 'falling off the grid'. We enjoyed exploring this remote region with a guide (included in the package) and feeling completely isolated - in a good way. A few days of no emails or phone calls was great!

3) OK, so we didn't spend enough time there to do this tour (they had done it the day before), but we have both been there before anyhow. The King George Falls is just around the corner, and Faraway Bay's vessel the Diamond Lass will whisk you off to Western Australa's largest twin falls for a day trip that you'll never forget! Day tours, including this one, are all included in the package.

food report:

The dining experience is incomparable. Sitting around a huge wooden table in 'Eagle Lodge', the bay lights up with the colours of the sunset. Keep a look out for crocs and birdlife as your 5 star meal is freshly prepared and served with delicious wine and a friendly smile.

faraway bay is ideal for:

Those who love the bush and enjoy getting off the beaten track to experience a place that not many people have ever heard of, let alone visited. Birdwatchers, fishermen, rock-art lovers, star gazers and people who are adventurous at heart will love Faraway Bay.
